Auditory Brainstem Implant (ABI) and von Recklinghausens disease (NF-II)
Auditory Brainstem Implantation is a highly advanced type of implant surgery undertaken at St Vincent’s Hospital. It is one of only two centres in Australia which perform this procedure. The Auditory Brainstem Implant (ABI) is a modification of the cochlear implant where the electrodes are placed directly into the base of the brain on the cochlear nucleus. This procedure is limited to those patients who have lost both hearing nerves e.g. Neurofibromatosis Type 2.
